K40 China Laser Mirror and Focus Lens Cleaning

Maintenance and cleaning of the K40 China laser does not only include vacuuming the residual parts in the laser room. During lasing, smoke also rises in the area of the laser head and contaminates the focus lens. I use an air assist system. This constantly blows air directly onto the part to be lasered. This prevents the smoke from rising up to the lens and contaminating it. To get an optimal cut, the mirrors and the focus lens must also be cleaned in between.

I use cotton swabs and acetone for this. Caution: Acetone is a toxic and dangerous solvent. Acetone strongly degreases and dries the skin on contact. With prolonged or frequent skin contact, the chemical can trigger dermatitis, i.e. an inflammatory skin reaction. The vapours of the solvent are also harmful to health.

 

 

 


Caution: Mirrors and lenses are sensitive products and should be handled with care.
Furthermore, it should be noted that the mirrors and the focus lens should not be held with bare fingers. Our skin is kept moist by a kind of oil film. This moisture immediately leaves a fingerprint on the mirror or focus lens which is burnt into the mirror by the laser beam. So only touch the mirror and lens from the side or wear gloves.

K40 Check laser mirror settings and focus

Um das "Beste" aus dem K40 China Laser herauszuholen müssen die Spiegel und der Fokus überprüft und gegebenenfalls nachjustiert werden. Durch den Umbau des Lasers musste ich die ganze Mechanik aus dem Gerät aus- und anschliessend wieder einbauen. Ein nachjustieren der Spiegel ist also unumgänglich. Wenn beim lasern festgestellt wird das auf der einen Seite die Teile korrekt durchgelasert sind und an einer andern Stelle die Schnitte nicht gänzlich ausgeschnitten wurden, deutet dies darauf hin das entweder der Lasertisch nicht an allen Orten die gleiche Höhe ausweist oder das die Spiegel bzw der Fokus nicht korrekt eingestellt ist.

Das Prinzip:

Der Laserstrahl wird von der Laserröhre nach links auf den ersten Umlekspiegel gerichtet. Dieser leitet den Strahl auf den vorderen fahrbaren Spiegel. Dort wird der Laserstrahl zum Laserkopf umgelenkt.
Ziel ist es das der Laserstrahl möglichst mittig auf den Spiegel auftritt. Um dies in jeder Position sicherzustellen ist dies an diversen Punkten zu überprüfen. (mind. 4 rote Punkte) Trifft der Laserstrahl nicht mittig auf den Spiegel, driftet der Laserstrahl anschliessend seitlich weg. Somit ist es möglich das der Laser an einer Position sehr gute Ergebnisse erziehlt und an einer andern Position kein Laserstrahl mehr ankommt. Mit den 3 Justierschrauben kann der Spiegel exakt einjustiert werden.

What is the best way to proceed:

After the first mirror, the laser beam is redirected to the front through the opening in the housing. An adhesive tape can be attached to the opening and then the test button pressed. Be careful not to reach into the unit and take care of your eyes. A small burn mark will be visible in the adhesive tape after it has been triggered.

This is helpful to determine the position for the next mirror. For the second mirror, also stick a piece of tape or a small piece of wood with double-sided tape in front of the mirror. Then move the slide to the rearmost position. Release the test button, then push the slide all the way forward and release the test button again. The two points should be exactly on top of each other and centred in the mirror. If this is not the case, the mirrors can be adjusted with the 3 adjustment screws. It is a matter of patience, but you will be rewarded with a good result

Adjust focus:

The laser beam is directed from the left movable deflection mirror directly onto the inclined mirror in the laser head through the lens onto the workpiece. Normally the distance from the lens is 50.08mm.
The laser beam should be as bundled as possible onto the workpiece.

Adjusting the focus is no magic. Simply place a remnant on the laser table and place something underneath on one side. Then send a job with a line to the laser. The focus must then be determined on the piece of wood and the height of the laser table adjusted accordingly. With an adjustable laser table, this can be done in no time at all.

K40 Whisperer the alternative software for the China Laser

A CD with a USB dongle is supplied with the K40 China Laser. On it is an old Corel Draw 12 version and a piece of software called LaserCDR. Since there is already a newer version of Corel on the computer, I only installed LaserCDR. After researching on the net, I came across K40 Whisperer, which means K40 Whisperer. K40 Whisperer is an alternative to LaserDraw.
I have had the best experience with the following programmes

  • Corel Draw (to mark the laser template)
  • Inkscape (convert the Corel file into an SVG file)
  • K1 Whisperer(hands the file to the laser)

Corel Draw

Corel Draw is a powerful graphics software. I use it to create all my templates for laser engraving.
The following colours and their meaning
Rot (RGB 255,0,0) = Laser cut
Blau (RGB 0,0,255) = Vektor engraving
Schwarz = (RGB 0,0,0) = Raster engraving

The finished graphic can be saved as a cdr Corel file.

Inkscape

The K40 Whisperer cannot read in a Corel file. If the file is exported or saved as a dxf in Corel, the data is not transferred correctly. Therefore, an intermediate step must be taken.
With InkScape the Corel file can be read in and then saved as SVG.

K40 Whisperer

K40 Whisperer is an alternative software for the China Laser. The programme can be obtained free of charge here https://www.scorchworks.com/K40whisperer/k40whisperer.html
Download the appropriate version for your operating system. Choose the installer version. This version contains the appropriate driver and will be installed. The installation should not cause any problems. In case of unexpected problems, you will find the appropriate help on the same page under K40 Whisperer Reference Manual.
In my case Whisperer only did not find the Inkscape.exe on the computer and gave an error message. Press the button "Find Inkscape" under General Setting and then search for the file Inkscape.exe on the computer. In the same setting, change the units to "mm" and set the laser area (note that this depends on your laser table). Since I have installed a new height-adjustable laser table, the entire area is available to me. Finally, save the settings at the bottom with "Save". Otherwise they will be lost the next time you start the machine and have to be re-entered.

Before you start the first laser cut, make sure that the water cooling and the ventilation on the laser are switched on.

General Setting
After starting K40 Whisperer, press the button "Initialize Laser Cutter". The connection to the laser is established. If a red bar with an error message appears at the bottom of the programme, try using a different USB output on your computer. Then use the button "Open Design File" to read in the SVG file previously created with inkscape.

Pfeile = The laser head can be moved via the panel. Step size can be set under Jog Step

The lower 3 buttons are the most important
Raster Engrave = Starts the engraving process. All raster images are engraved (filling).
Verctor Engrafe  = Starts the engraving process All vector graphics are engraved (outlines)
Vector Cut = Starts the laser process. All red lines are lasered

The buttons are arranged in exactly the same way as the laser or engraving process is to be started. If Vector Cut is started first, the loose part will lie on the laser table and will probably move during the engraving process. The cutting speed can be set behind the corresponding start button

 

Conversion and adaptation 40W CO2 China laser

I couldn't wait for my new speil stuff to finally arrive. But then I was completely surprised. I ordered it on Saturday and it arrived on Wednesday. It was only announced in about 1 1/2 weeks.
During my research on the Internet, I came across various articles. The China Laser is cheap, but it has a few deficits in the design. One of them is safety-related deficiencies. For example, a missing emergency stop switch. Or a defective earth connection. The cable lug of the earth conductor was clamped directly onto the paint. The other deficiencies are in the design. In this respect, we Western Europeans are still a nose ahead of the Asians. But this is also reflected in the price.

Self-made adjustable table for K40 China Laser Engraver

Anyone who makes the first attempts with the 40W China Laser will quickly realise that the existing table is not usable. It cannot be adjusted in height. If a higher workpiece is placed on the table, the laser beam can no longer be focused. The workpiece is too close to the lens. This cannot be adjusted on the machine. Therefore, only a height adjustment of the table is possible to adjust the focusing.
Therefore I decided to build an adjustable table myself. The existing table can be removed from the unit with a few screws and disposed of.
What should it be able to do, the new table?
I would like to install the table in the housing without making any major changes to the unit. The height should be adjustable at one point and the other 3 feet should move to the same position at the same time. As far as possible, only parts that can be found in DIY stores or ordered on the Internet should be used.
